Every April, communities across the nation recognize Strengthening Families Month—a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of building healthy, resilient families. Our Strengthening Families Month events were a true celebration of community spirit and family support. From educational workshops to family-friendly gatherings, each activity reinforced the message that every family has strengths, and every community plays a role in helping those strengths grow.
At Mountain States Early Head Start, we are committed to working hand in hand with families and community partners to ensure all children have the safe, stable, and nurturing environments they need to succeed. By promoting these Five Protective Factors, we’re investing in a brighter, stronger future.
What Are Protective Factors?
Protective factors are the positive qualities, supports, and conditions in a family’s life that help reduce risk and promote well-being. When families have strong protective factors in place, they are better equipped to manage stress, navigate challenges, and nurture healthy children.
At MSEHS, we centered our Strengthening Families Month initiatives around the Five Protective Factors identified as key to family and community resilience. These protective factors are not just for times of crisis—they support growth, learning, and stability every day.
The Five Protective Factors Every Family Needs
- Parental Resilience
Life can be tough, but this protective factor is all about bouncing back from hard times—and even growing stronger because of them. It’s about staying hopeful and being able to keep moving forward as a parent. - Social Connections
Having strong, positive relationships makes a big difference. Supportive friends, neighbors, and community groups help reduce stress and prevent isolation. - Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development
Understanding how kids grow physically, emotionally, and socially helps parents guide them with confidence. It also helps parents know what to expect as their children learn and develop at different ages and stages. - Concrete Support in Times of Need
Every family needs help and support sometimes. Whether it’s access to food, housing, childcare, or health and medical services, getting the right support can help reduce stress and keep families safe and stable. - Social and Emotional Skills in Children
When caregivers nurture their children’s ability to communicate clearly, and recognize and regulate their emotions, it helps children express themselves, build and maintain relationships, and manage their feelings in healthy ways. These skills set them up for success at home, in school, and in life.
Strengthening Families Month reminds us that we all play a role in supporting families and helping children thrive. By coming together as a community, sharing resources, and promoting the Five Protective Factors, we create lasting impacts that extend far beyond a single month. At MSEHS, we are proud to be part of this ongoing effort to empower parents, uplift children, and build a foundation of strength, safety, and connection that benefits generations to come.
