Becoming a parent is one of life’s most exciting—and overwhelming—experiences. From learning how to swaddle and soothe to tracking developmental milestones and managing sleep schedules, every day comes with new questions and challenges.
That’s why home visiting programs exist. In North Idaho, Mountain States Early Head Start (MSEHS) provides free home visiting services for families with infants and toddlers, helping parents feel confident, informed, and supported every step of the way.
Whether you live in Coeur d’Alene, Rathdrum, Sandpoint, Kellogg, or Bonners Ferry, MSEHS brings the support you need right to your door.
Why Home Visiting Matters
During the first three years of life, a child’s brain is developing faster than it ever will again. These early experiences shape everything from language skills to emotional regulation. But parents aren’t expected to know it all—that’s where home visiting helps.
MSEHS home visitors are trained professionals who partner with parents to support child development, parenting skills, and family well-being.
They don’t replace you—they empower you.
What You Can Expect from a Home Visit
Every family’s needs are different, so no two home visits are exactly the same. But here’s what’s typically included:
- A weekly visit from a caring early childhood specialist
- Personalized activities designed to promote learning and bonding
- Developmental screenings and milestone tracking
- Help with routines, sleep, nutrition, and behavior
- A judgment-free space to ask questions and be heard
- Access to free diapers, books, toys, and baby gear when available
Each visit lasts about an hour—and it’s all about making life a little easier and a lot more supported.
How Home Visitors Support You
Our staff doesn’t just observe your child’s development—they help you make sense of it all. That might look like:
- Showing you how to encourage tummy time or crawling
- Practicing sign language to support early communication
- Modeling ways to respond to tantrums or biting
- Helping you plan fun, educational activities at home
- Offering emotional support for postpartum stress or parenting anxiety

How It Works Across North Idaho
Whether you live in a rural mountain town or a busy city center, MSEHS works with you to make home visiting accessible.
- In Sandpoint, your home visitor might bring activity kits and connect you to local food support.
- In Coeur d’Alene, you might be invited to a playgroup or community event.
- In Kellogg or Bonners Ferry, your visitor can bring learning tools and resources directly to your home.
We understand the communities we serve—and we build our support around what works for your life.

Why Families Love Home Visiting
Even though we don’t share testimonials, we can confidently say that many families stay with MSEHS through multiple children because they feel seen, supported, and empowered.
Home visiting isn’t about “fixing” your parenting. It’s about giving you tools, encouragement, and backup when you need it most.
If you’ve ever wished someone could just show you how to help your baby sleep, talk, play, or grow—this is it.
